1. Remove the filler cap.
2. Add engine oil that meets Ford specifications. SeeCapacities and
Specificationsfor more information.
3. Replace the filler cap. Turn it until you feel a strong resistance.
ENGINE COOLANT CHECK
Checking the Engine Coolant
The concentration and level of engine coolant should be checked at the
intervals listed inScheduled Maintenance Information.
The coolant concentration should be maintained within 48% to 50%,
which equates to a freeze point between -30°F (-34°C) and -34°F
(-37°C).
Note:For best results, coolant concentration should be tested with a
refractometer such as Rotunda tool 300-ROB75240 available from your
dealer. Ford does not recommend the use of hydrometers or coolant test
strips for measuring coolant concentrations.
Note:Make sure that the level is between the MIN and MAX marks on
the coolant reservoir.
Note:Coolant expands when it is hot. The level may extend beyond the
MAX mark.
If the level is at the MIN mark, add coolant immediately. SeeAdding
Engine Coolantin this chapter.
Note:Automotive fluids are not interchangeable. Do not use engine
coolant/antifreeze or windshield washer fluid outside of its specified
function and vehicle location.
Adding Engine Coolant
WARNING:Do not add engine coolant when the engine is hot.
Steam and scalding liquids released from a hot cooling system
can burn you badly. Also, you can be burned if you spill coolant on hot
engine parts.
WARNING:Do not put engine coolant in the windshield washer
fluid container. If sprayed on the windshield, engine coolant
could make it difficult to see through the windshield.

Note:Police pursuits, involving hard braking, result in high temperatures
in the brake system - including the brake fluid. Over time, repeated
exposure to high brake temperatures can degrade brake fluid, potentially
reducing its boiling point. A lower boiling point could cause long brake
pedal travel and a loss of braking confidence during subsequent pursuit
driving. Ford recommends that police fleets replace the brake fluid at
every brake pad service interval according to the service procedure.
Brake fluid should be replaced on vehicles involved in high speed
pursuits with heavy brake usage.
POWER STEERING FLUID CHECK
Your vehicle is equipped with an electric power steering (EPS) system.
There is no fluid reservoir to check or fill. For additional information on
the electric power steering (EPS) system, Refer toDriving Aids.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuel filter that is integrated with
the fuel tank. Regular maintenance or replacement is not needed.
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING:If you operate your vehicle in temperatures below
40°F (5°C), use washer fluid with antifreeze protection. Failure
to use washer fluid with antifreeze protection in cold weather could
result in impaired windshield vision and increase the risk of injury or
accident.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low. Only use a washer fluid
that meets Ford specifications. See the technical specifications chart in
theCapacities and Specificationschapter.
Note:The front and rear washer systems are supplied from the same
reservoir.
State or local regulations on volatile organic compounds may restrict the
use of methanol, a common windshield washer antifreeze additive.
Washer fluids containing non-methanol antifreeze agents should be used
only if they provide cold weather protection without damaging the
vehicle’s paint finish, wiper blades or washer system.

1Ford recommends using Motorcraft (Ford) DOT 4 LV High Performance Brake Fluid or
equivalent meeting WSS-M6C65-A2. Use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may
cause degraded brake performance and not meet the Ford performance standards. Keep brake
fluid clean and dry. Contamination with dirt, water, petroleum products or other materials may
result in brake system damage and possible failure.2Approximate dry fill capacity. Actual amount may vary during fluid changes.3Automatic transmissions that require MERCON LV should only use MERCON LV fluid. Refer to
scheduled maintenance informationto determine the correct service interval. Use of any fluid
other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage.4See your authorized dealer for fluid level checking or filling.5The design of your engine allows for the use of Motorcraft engine oils or equivalent oils that meet
Ford specifications. It is also acceptable to use an engine oil of recommended viscosity grade that
meets API SN requirements and displays the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines.6Do not use API S category oils labeled as SN, SM, SL or lower category unless the label also
displays the API certification mark. These oils do not meet the requirements of the engine and
emission system.7Do not use supplemental engine oil additives in your engine. They are unnecessary and could
lead to engine damage not covered by your Ford warranty.8Add the coolant type originally equipped in your vehicle.9See warning below:
WARNING:The air conditioning refrigerant system contains refrigerant R–134a under high
pressure. Opening and air conditioning refrigerant system can cause personal injury. Only
qualified personnel should service the air conditioning refrigerant system.
